Definition
The agent doesn't just generate code — it also tests the output, identifies failures, and patches them autonomously. A self-correcting feedback loop after the initial generation pass.
Comparison
| Dimension | Replit | Anything.com |
|---|---|---|
| Has it? | ✅ Replit - Autonomous Build Mode | ✅ Anything.com - Max |
| Productized as | One of 5 features in Replit Core bundle | Dedicated "Max" add-on SKU |
| Marketing name | "Autonomous Build Mode" | "Max" (with "coding agent going viral" tagline) |
| Evidence | Core upgrade modal lists it (captured 2026-04-23) | Docs page + upsell throughout workspace |
| Agent self-verification | Agent takes screenshots to verify UI (observed in Replit - Agent Chat with Preview) | Marketed as autonomous testing + fixing |
| Invocation | Task-board level (Background Tasks bundle) | Contextual ("Use MAX here" inside previews) + global |
Correction from earlier ingest
resolved: The 2026-04-22 ingest (docs-only) marked Replit as NOT having this capability. The 2026-04-23 screenshot ingest revealed Replit's Core upgrade modal explicitly lists "Autonomous Build Mode" alongside Plan Mode, Connectors, Mobile Simulators, and Background Tasks. Both competitors now compete on this axis. The previous dashboard matrix cell is wrong.
Strategic implications
This was supposed to be Anything.com's moat. It isn't — Replit has it too.
The remaining distinction is packaging + marketing rather than capability:
- Replit: bundled. Autonomy is one of 5 Core features. Users upgrading for security scanning also get autonomy. Good if you want one-price-unlocks-everything.
- Anything.com: unbundled. Max is sold separately on top of Pro. More pricing tiers, captures willingness-to-pay for autonomy specifically. Good if autonomy is the critical hook for a specific audience slice.
Both have trade-offs. For the Indie Makers and Solopreneurs audience that cares most about getting things built fast, the marketing story matters more than the bundle shape — and Anything.com's "Max | The coding agent going viral" naming is stickier than Replit's functional "Autonomous Build Mode" label.
Depth-axis autonomy (test + fix loop)
Replit evidence of real autonomy
- Agent takes screenshots to verify UI state (see Replit - Agent Chat with Preview).
- Tool-call logs visible — the agent runs CLI commands and evaluates their output before deciding next steps.
- Multi-step verification chains observable in the chat thread (
Ran cli→ result → next step).
Anything.com evidence
- Marketing claim: "autonomous testing and fixing."
- Screenshots don't yet show a Max run in progress. Clip a Max session on next ingest to compare depth.
